The Rest That Remains
“There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His.”
Hebrews 4:9-10 · NKJV
The writer holds up God's seventh day, the day God ceased because everything was complete, and says a rest like that still stands open for you.
Entering it means one thing: ceasing from your own works as the basis of your standing. Not ceasing from working, but ceasing from working for acceptance. The striving to earn what Christ has already secured is the labor this verse retires.
By Sunday evening the week ahead is already sitting on your chest. The inbox, the calendar, the people counting on you. Somewhere under the to-do list is a quieter question: did I do enough this week to be okay with God? That question is the labor Hebrews is talking about, and it follows you into church, into prayer, even into your time off. The work of Monday is real, and much of it is good. But you are allowed to walk into it already at rest, because the verdict on you was settled before the alarm ever goes off.
Under the New Covenant, rest is not the reward at the end of a productive week. It is the starting point of the whole life. The work that mattered most was finished by Someone else.
You may cease from proving today. The work beneath your acceptance is finished, and the rest is open.
