Returned to the Shepherd

“For you were like sheep going astray, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.”

1 Peter 2:25 · NKJV

Were. Have now returned. Peter puts your wandering in the past tense and your homecoming in the present.

Sheep do not find their way home by cleverness. They are found. The returning in this verse was the Shepherd's doing, the same Shepherd who had just borne your sins in His own body on the tree. He carried the cost, then carried you back.

Some believers still live like strays who were let back in on a trial basis. They stay near the edge of the flock, sure that one more wandering season will get them sent back out. You may know that feeling: the months you drifted, the prayers you stopped praying, the church you quietly left. Peter does not deny any of it. Your wandering was real, and so is the Shepherd who went to the trouble of carrying you home on His own shoulders. He is not looking for an excuse to set you down.

And now He holds a permanent office over your life: Shepherd and Overseer of your souls. Watching, feeding, keeping. Your soul has a Keeper whose eye does not wander even when yours does.

You are not a stray anymore. The Shepherd who found you now keeps watch over your soul.
