The Right to Be His
“But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:”
John 1:12 · NKJV
John does not say they achieved it, negotiated it, or qualified for it. He gave it.
The word behind right is the word for authority. It is the legal standing to be what you could never make yourself. A child cannot arrange its own birth, and you did not arrange this one. Receiving is not a contribution. It is open hands.
A birth certificate names a baby who did nothing to earn the name. She did not pass an interview or prove she would be easy to raise. The standing was simply hers, written down on the first day of her life, and no bad week in her teenage years could make her any less a daughter of that house. That is what John means by right. You were not given a trial membership in God's family, pending good behavior. You were given the name, the standing, and a seat at the table.
So when the accusation comes that you do not belong here, notice what it is arguing with. A gift already given. Your place in the family does not rest on how the week went. It rests on what He gave the day you received Him.
You hold a right you did not earn. Nothing today can revoke what Jesus handed you Himself.
