So Loved
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
John 3:16 · NKJV
You have heard it since childhood, which is exactly how a sentence stops landing. Taken slowly, the order is unmistakable. Love came first, and giving followed.
God did not wait for the world to become lovable. He looked at it as it was and gave what could not be replaced. That is what the word so is doing. It is not measuring the size of the love. It is describing the way He loved, all the way to a Son handed over.
Most of us believe John 3:16 about the world and quietly exempt ourselves. The world, yes. The stranger on the mission trip, the neighbor who has never been to church, of course. But you, knowing what you know about your own heart? Surely the love has fine print for people who were raised in church and still struggle. There is no fine print. The world in this verse is not a crowd you watch from a safe distance. You are standing in it, and the gift was aimed at you by name.
Whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. Believing is not a work you perform well enough to unlock the gift. It is trust settling on the One already given.
God moved first. Everlasting life began in His heart, not in your effort.
