In Me, and I in You

“At that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you.”

John 14:20 · NKJV

Jesus is telling His friends what the cross and the Spirit are about to make true, and it is not a God who lives nearby. It is a shared life.

The chain has three links. He is in the Father. You are in Him. He is in you. That is not a reward for spiritual maturity, and it is not a feeling you have to sustain. It is a location, and you were placed there.

Picture sitting in a hospital parking lot after the kind of news that rearranges a year. You cannot pray in sentences. You feel nothing but numb. It would be easy to conclude that God has gone quiet and far away. But Jesus spoke this verse the night before His own suffering, to men who were about to feel abandoned. He did not promise them a feeling. He told them where they would be. In Him, and He in them. The parking lot is not outside that address.

Some mornings you will feel it and some mornings you will not. The verse does not say you will feel it. It says you will know it. Knowing rests on His word about where you are, not on today’s weather inside you.

You are in Him and He is in you. That is your address, and it does not move.
