Made Righteous

“For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous.”

Romans 5:19 · NKJV

Paul puts your righteousness in the passive voice, and that is the whole point. Something was done to you.

Made righteous. Not counted righteous while you actually remain otherwise, and not slowly becoming righteous if the decade goes well. The obedience that accomplished it was His, offered once, and it landed on many.

A man grew up in church, and at forty he is still taking his spiritual temperature every night. Did I pray enough today? Was that thought a sin? Am I actually changing, or just better at hiding it? He reads his own heart like a lab report and never likes the results. His problem is not that he is too honest. It is that he is grading his standing in the wrong place. Change is real, and it comes, but it grows out of righteousness. It was never the proof of it. The righteousness he keeps searching for was never going to show up in the lab. It was handed to him through One Man's obedience, and it is already his.

This is why self-inspection never settles anything. You are searching for evidence of a change that was never located in your behavior to begin with. It was located in His obedience, and it is as secure as He is.

You were made righteous by His obedience. That verdict is not up for review today.
