A Different Law
“For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.”
Romans 8:2 · NKJV
Paul answers one law with another, and the new one is a life rather than a rule.
The law of sin and death was doing what it always does, and no amount of effort inside that system escapes it. So instead of sending more instruction, God sent life, in Christ Jesus, by His Spirit.
A jet at thirty thousand feet has not switched off gravity. The pull is still there, every second of the flight. It simply is not in charge, because a greater law is at work under the wings. That is the picture Paul is painting. The law of sin and death still pulls, and on some days you will feel it hard. But the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus is the stronger law now, and it is the one your life answers to. You still fly the plane. You just do not supply the lift.
Has made me free. Completed action. Paul is reporting a change of jurisdiction that already happened, to him and to you in the same Christ, not a fight he hopes to win someday.
A greater law is already at work in you. Freedom is your jurisdiction, not your goal.
