God at Work in You
“for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.”
Philippians 2:13 · NKJV
Paul names two things people usually assume are their own department. Wanting to, and actually doing it.
Both, he says, are God’s work in you. That does not turn you into a passenger. It means the life you are living is not being generated by your willpower, and it does not collapse on the days your willpower does.
Consider the desire itself. The morning you wanted to forgive someone you had every reason to resent. The night you wanted to pray even though you were exhausted. The moment you wanted to tell the truth when the lie would have been easier. You may think those wants came from your better self. Paul says they came from God, working in you. And when the doing came slowly, or cost you something real, that was not proof He had stopped. It was the same God, working both the wanting and the doing, at His pace and for His pleasure.
And look at the motive. For His good pleasure. Not to fill a quota, not to keep you barely acceptable. God works in you because it delights Him to, the way a father enjoys what he is building in a child he already loves.
God is working the wanting and the doing. You are not the engine, and that is good news.
