A Cleansed Conscience

“how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?”

Hebrews 9:14 · NKJV

The writer is comparing the old sacrifices to this one, and the difference is depth.

The old system could handle ceremonial cleanness. It could not touch the inside. Hebrews says the blood of Christ reaches the conscience, the place where you keep the running list of what still needs answering.

The conscience keeps a list most of us never say out loud. The friend you drifted from and never called. The words at the funeral you wish you had said differently. The years you gave to the wrong things. At night the list reads itself back, and religion usually hands you more to do about it: pray more, give more, serve more, and maybe the list will get shorter. Hebrews offers something else. The blood of Christ goes down to the place where the list is kept and answers it there. Where something can still be made right with a person, you are free to do it, but you are not doing it to earn your peace with God.

Cleansed from dead works. Dead works are not scandals here. They are the exhausting efforts to make yourself acceptable to a God who is already satisfied. When the conscience is cleansed, that entire industry closes down.

Your conscience was cleansed, not merely covered. The list you keep running was answered.
